Artist Statement

The scientific and philosophical theories of chaos are the foundations of my work.  Chaos represents creativity in science and the discovery that there are phenomena in nature that do not fit within the predictable constructs of traditional science.  It is these imperfections that I believe paradoxically create perfection and wholeness in all aspects of life as well as science.

Right angles and straight lines are what humans, including myself, love to construct.  I see this “forcing” of nature as a basic human problem, which also challenges my technical knowledge and ability to work with the medium of sculptural ceramics.  I use these geometric forms like architectural windows to capture a glimpse into the complexities of chaos in the natural world.  Perpendicular lines also represent the view created by scientific curiosity from which humans narrowly base their understanding of the ways of nature.

I am fascinated by nature’s designs that have evolved over infinite time. The sacred spiral structure is seen in much of my work in forms such as the DNA helix, the Big Bang, the eye of a hurricane, the flow of water in a river and in the uncurling of a fiddlehead fern in spring.  These forms that appear to move, grow and expand summon a sense of potential and change that I find deeply intriguing.
