Artist Statement 2024

With a background in biology, images relating to science and nature are consistently present in Julie Anderson’s work. Her latest wall sculptures explore how plants move in the wind, unfurl, grow and age over time. Budding flowers and leaves intensify their colors as they open up. She uses a gradient of glaze colors to exemplify the sprouting and aging of these living beings. As plants mature, their veins become more pronounced. Their leaves whither and flowers gracefully turn to seeds relinquishing their offspring not only to create new plants, but also to nourish a new generation of birds or mammals in a harmonious ecological system.

Studio Life

In addition to working as a professional artist, Julie Anderson and her partner Gregory Grasso own and operate a community art center, Warehome Studios. Located in the beautiful mountain town of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, they offer classes and studio space for ceramics, glass arts and stonework.

Julie is passionate about teaching in a way that gives students the confidence and technical understanding of working with clay. After teaching for over 20 years, she has discovered many different ways of explaining processes on the potter’s wheel as well in hand-building.  Patience, kindness and humor are her strongest attributes in the instruction process. She teaches classes and private lessons in her studio.
